How Long Will It Take To Set Up My Budget?

How Long Will It Take To Set Up My Budget?
Buckets of Money Team·April 16, 2026

You want to start and maintain a budget to feel more confident and in control of your money. You feel like "it's time" to move forward financially, and you have landed here, the home of the Buckets of Money Budget. Welcome. Like many others, you might be wondering, "How long will it take to set up my budget?

As the creator of the Buckets of Money Budget, I get this question a lot. I understand why people want to know.

You are ready. You know you need a budget. A little piece of you even feels like you want a budget.

I said little. I get it, most people see a need for a budget because they want to be better with money, but it's nothing they really want to do, which is why your question is super valid.

When you think about budgeting, or maybe based on experience, it can feel like it's going to take a lot of time and energy.

Come with me as I directly answer your question and then explain why it will take the time it takes…

It will take 30 minutes to 2 hours to set up your budget inside the Buckets of Money Budget.

Why does the setup time vary so much?

The more familiar you are with what your bills aare nd what you are currently paying for, the quicker your budget will be to set up. If you are very familiar with your bills, maybe you are simply copying your budget from a spreadsheet, in which case it will take 30 minutes or less to set it up in the Buckets of Money Budget.

The setup is simple. It's the gathering of the information that can take some time.

The less familiar you are with what bills you are currently paying for, the longer it will take to set up your budget. The system is simple. It takes less than 30 seconds to set up each bucket (expense) The majority of the time spent setting up a budget inside the Buckets of Money Budget is figuring out what you need to enter into the actual system.

Recently, I taught a workshop about money mindset and budgeting success, and then everyone set up their budgets.

Some people had their numbers ready to go.

Others went diligently through their credit card and debit card statements to figure out what they have been paying for and decide what they want to keep paying for.

Both are okay, and it's the process that matters.

If it takes someone 30 minutes to set up their budget, they have likely already gone through their bills, checking accounts, credit cards, etc., to familiarize themselves with their money.

On the other hand, taking two hours to set up your budget means you are getting familiar with your money to be able to create a successful budget.

You might not have opened your accounts in months, and you get to change that and become familiar with your money.

This is a good thing, and putting it off won't make it take less time in the future.

What does it mean to be familiar with your money?

Know and have the amounts of all the bills you are currently paying Know what else is being taken out of your checking account or charged to your credit card.

You also want to look through your credit or debit statements for a few months to see if there are any non-monthly bills you have to pay.

For example, my family has a quarterly trash bill and a semi-annual stormwater bill.

If you have bills similar to this, make sure you remember to add these to your budget so that they are not surprises later.

Don't worry, you will set up these non-monthly bills, and Buckets of Money will tell you what amount to leave in your account each month so that you have the money when the bill comes due.

We'll use my last semi-annual bill as an example. It was $165. Here's how that works:

  1. You check a box to add the bill.
  2. Enter $165 in the amount.
  3. Select "2x a year" as payment interval
  4. It shows you at the bottom the monthly amount
  5. It deducts the monthly amount of the bill from the amount you have remaining to spend in your budget.

Should I wait until I have gone through all my accounts to set up my budget?

No, because going through and getting familiar with your money while you are doing your budget is a great way to decide what goes in your budget.

Buckets of Money Budget is also designed to help you think of everything you might be paying for.

Here is what Ali said, "All the categories you had in there were really good to jog the memory!"

If you choose to cancel something because you want that money for something else, you can do it all at once.

Ali also said, "I made some decisions and dropped around £40 a month in unnecessary expenses (which is a lot for me) and reallocated."

Getting familiar with your money while setting up your budget is a great way to do it.

You simply need to set aside the time.

Two hours might be too much time. What I have found is that when people who haven't looked at their money in a while start setting up their budget, they start digging and go down a couple of good rabbit holes.

It's all part of the process, and you want to do it.

What if I don't know how much something is?

You are not alone in not knowing exactly how much you pay for things. It's okay. You simply figure out which account you pay that bill from and go look it up.

All the hunting down payment amounts is built into the two hours it could take you to set up your budget, so it's not like you will be adding hours if you don't know all your financial details.

What if I forget something?

This is a normal worry, and I have seen the fear that you will forget something when you set up your budget, keep people putting off setting up their budget.

It's a possibility, and Buckets of Money was set up strategically to lower that risk to its users. In every category, it lists out all the possible things I have seen people have to pay for over the years of helping them set up their budgets.

The best way to protect against forgetting something is to go category by category; there are only 10.

Open them up and scan the list.

Doing this will jog your memory and help make sure you got everything.

If you are still worried about forgetting something, the system has a Buffer Bucket you can use.

This is a category you use to buffer against things you might have forgotten. Once you have entered all the expenses you have to pay for, you can click on Buffer Budget.

Then you decide how much you want to set aside in this bucket. I suggest 1-10% of your income.

You enter the amount you want to set aside, and the system deducts the amount from what you have remaining to spend.

This bucket will accumulate the amount you have set aside each month. If nothing comes up that you forgot in 3-12 months, you can allocate the money to savings, paying off debt, or something else.

Can I mess it up?

If you go through your credit card and checking statements (anywhere you spend money) you are unlikely to mess up setting up your budget.

Maybe you might miss something, and we talked about how to handle that in the question above.

Being afraid to mess it up is likely a reflection of how you feel about your money right now.

You might feel like you have messed it up. You haven't saved enough. Maybe you are judging that you have debt. Or that you don't know where your money goes. You don't feel like you have saved enough You feel behind

That's okay. You are not alone.

You can let that judgment go and start focusing on moving forward financially. Setting up your budget is the first step in that process.

Do I have to do math?

No, because while I like doing math, especially when it comes to money, most people do not. I have seen math be a barrier to people setting up budgets that work for them.

Over the years of helping people with their budget, I set up my spreadsheets so they wouldn't have to do the math in order to set up a proper budget.

The system does the math for you, so all you have to do is enter numbers and the intervals you pay or get paid, like weekly, every 2 weeks, 2x a month, quarterly, etc.

But how long is it going to take to track once I set it up?

Tracking takes much less time than setting up your budget.

The Buckets of Money Budget uses a smart bucket system, so you only have to track the things that need to be tracked. For example, groceries or fun.

You don't track the payments that are the same every month, like rent/mortgage or your streaming subscriptions.

That way, your tracking lift is low.

It takes about 30 seconds per transaction to track. Our family of 3 tracks between 30 and 60 transactions a month. That is 30 minutes or less total a month.

So even if you are not perfect at tracking, catching up is quick and easy.

Make a date to set up your budget

Now that we've covered the original and many more questions, let's get back to talking about setting up your budget…

The best time to set up your budget is right now if you have the time. Doing it when you are thinking about it is great.

If you can't do it right now, schedule a time in our calendar right now.

When the date comes, make it as fun as possible. Get some takeout from your favorite restaurant or cook your favorite meal. Sit down and dive into your financial situation.

I know if you are reading this, there is a good chance you have put off looking at your finances for a while. I also know something is calling you to move past that and get started so that you can move yourself forward financially.

Did you schedule the date yet? Do it now. Better yet, get started now!

Whether you are going to do it now, or you are setting a date in your calendar, start if you are ready to:

  • Take control of your financials
  • Stop being afraid of your accounts
  • Be better with money

The Buckets of Money Budget is designed to help you do just that.

If you start your budget journey today…

Money will start to feel lighter.

You will stop stressing over every purchase.

You can enjoy spending — because you know it's covered.

There is a place in your future where money feels good, and you feel like you are good with money (maybe even proud).

In that future place, you are paying for all the things you have to pay for and some or all of the things you want to pay for.

What else is in the future for you?

  • A savings account
  • Six months of expenses in a safety net account
  • More vacations
  • Less stress
  • Relief when you have to buy something
  • Excitement that you are nailing your budget
  • Feeling like you are on track with everyone else
  • Something else….

Take a few minutes to think about what life will look and feel like when having a budget and managing your money is part of your everyday life….

Step 1: Set up your budget (without overwhelm)

You'll be guided step-by-step to:

  • Add your "Have To" expenses first
  • See what's already covered
  • And understand what you actually have available

You don't have to figure it out on your own—the system walks you through it.

Step 2: Create your buckets

You'll organize your money into simple buckets:

  • What you need to spend
  • What you want to spend
  • And what you need to save for

Including the things that usually throw you off—like car repairs, birthdays, and annual bills.

Step 3: See your money clearly for the first time

Once everything is set up, something clicks.

You can open your budget and instantly see:

  • What's taken care of
  • What's coming up
  • And what you can spend

This is where the stress starts to go down.

Step 4: Start using it in real life (in minutes a day)

When you spend money, you enter it quickly (30 seconds or less).

That's it.

No catching up for hours. No complicated tracking.

Just simple updates that keep you connected to your money.

Step 5: Make decisions with confidence

As you go through your days, you'll start to notice:

You're not guessing anymore. You're not avoiding your money.

You're making choices based on what you can actually see.

Step 6: Adjust without starting over

Spent more than planned? Life happened?

No problem.

You'll:

  • Move money if needed
  • Make a new choice
  • Keep going

This is where things start to feel different.

This Is Where Things Start to Change

You go from:

  • Feeling unsure → to clear
  • Avoiding your money → to checking in confidently
  • Starting over → to staying consistent

And it doesn't require perfection.
